What Tracy described is a great solution when you have a farm deployment and can modify its topology.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work if you deploy SP2010 as stand-alone server (even enterprise edition) or a foundation edition, which is often the case for developers running SP on their laptops.
Thanks for the great tip Tracy! It is definitely a useful one.

Hi Art,

Just an FYI, you can in fact manipulate search index file locations via the Central Admin interface after installation.

CA > Application Management > Manage service applications > Search Service Application > Search Application Topology (Modify) > Index Partition/Query Component (Edit Properties). Repeat for each query component within your farm.

Cheers!

Note: if you want to use the javascript:MSOLayout_ToggleLayoutMode(); you need to have a web part already on the page in MOSS 2010. Otherwise the correct JS file that contains that function is not loaded. Thanks for the tip!

I find them both offering quite similar functionality. I personally enjoyed working with VSeWSS a bit more. The main difference though would be that VSeWSS is a product by Microsoft, while WSPBuilder is an open-source product. Generally you would expect a better support and integration provided by a professional organization. In addition, from consulting perspective if you look into larger deployments sometimes it is safer to stay with the official product, again mostly for the same support and maintainability reasons.

Many thanks for the superb resources covered here in your site, what follows is a little quiz for your website viewers. Exactly who said the following quote? . . . .A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Thanks for the tremendous information and facts listed throughout your website, below is a small question for your web site followers. Who said the following quotation? . . . .I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.
